Ray Smith se dio a conocer internacionalmente finales de los ochenta en un contexto en el que no fue difícil relacionarle con el neoexpresionismo, especialmente en su vertiente picabiana.Se comenzó a discutir sobre multiculturalidad y a elaborar discursos sobre el llamado arte del tercer mundo.Esto no le impide en cualquier caso, Haber sido capaz de pintar una impresionante alegoría de la historia de México, como en su obra Guernimex (1989-1990). Sin duda uno de los puntos álgidos de su trayectoria.
Desde su traslado a la ciudad de Nueva York en 1983 el artista México-americano entonces de cuarenta y dos años Ray Smith ha realizado un ingente catalogo de obras: alrededor de seiscientas pinturas figurativas, muchas de ellas a escala monumental, además de numerosos dibujos, esculturas, tapices y fotografías. Esta producción de diecisiete años es prodigiosa no solo en términos cuantitativos, sino también por su repertorio de imágenes. Smith representa a conocidos y parientes, personalidades históricas, criaturas mitológicas, animales, embellecimientos caligráficos y paisajes estilizados. Combinando fuentes primitivas con referencia culturales pop de gran modernidad.
Su obra forma parte de las grandes colecciones publicas y privadas del mundo, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Whitney Museum of American Art, Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Brooklin Museum of Art, Brooklin Nueva York, Cemex, Monterrey (México), Brooklin Museum of Art, Brooklin Nueva York, Centro Cultural de Arte Contemporáneo, Ciudad de México. Así como también en importantes colecciones particulares.
Entre 2006 y 2007 presento en el Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo La exposición DEUS-MACHINE,(Instituto de América / Centro Damián Bayón, Santa Fe Granada y Centro Cultural La regenta, Las Palmas De Gran Canaria , islas canarias.) misma que estuvo itinerante por diferentes museos y centros culturales de Europa y Latinoamérica también regresa a Monterrey (México) con la exposición El Orologista en GE Galería. Del 2008 al 2009 presento sus Nuevos Cadáveres Exquisitos, En Portugal Milán y Latinoamérica(Galería Fernando Santos, Porto/Lisboa,Portugal, en 2010 presenta su ultima gran retrospectiva en México.
